ENDOSCOPY / Gastrointestinal / Colorectal Dysfunction

GASTROINTESTINAL / COLORECTAL DYSFUNCTION

The diagnosis and management of a number of upper gastrointestinal conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux, coeliac disease and eosinophilic oesophagitis can be greatly facilitated by the use of  endoscopy of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.  Often these conditions will require longer-term management and review and I am happy to work in conjunction with your paediatricians.

We can liaise about further investigations and occasionally further surgery, for example fundoplication if appropriate.

Endoscopy of the large bowel (colonoscopy / flexible sigmoidoscopy) can provide useful information to look into causes of rectal bleeding in children. This may be due to a polyp or occasionally allergy. If there is concern of possible inflammatory bowel disease, an ileo-colonoscopy may be required and this would need to be performed by a paediatric gastroenterologist capable of performing this specialist investigation.
